Call for Presentation Proposals
Proposal Submission Deadline: June 30, 2007
The Southeast Regional Institute on Deafness (SERID) provides information to assist rehabilitation professionals, mental health workers, educators and interpreters in better serving consumers who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. The conference provides information on effective practices and current trends in the field.
Presentation Proposals
Presentation proposals should address current effective practices used in working with consumers who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Practices may apply to classroom, administration, counseling, interpreting, or evaluation settings. Proposals should be designed for 75-minute sessions with 15 minutes for questions and answers.
Possible Topics to be Addressed
Strand I – Rehabilitation / Employment
- Service strategies for consumers who are low functioning or “at-risk”
- Best practices and innovations in service delivery
- Mentoring clients
Strand II – Education
- Deaf culture/ASL
- Best practices and innovative ideas in education of students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing
- Transition issues
Strand III – Accessibility
- Communication access / assistive technology
- Emergency services; linking with consumers who are deaf or hard-of-hearing
- Interpreting in various settings
Strand IV – Mental Health
- Issues in Employment
- Counseling and Support Services
- Innovative Treatment Approaches
- Program Development and Implementation
Strand V – Deaf-Blind
- Issues in Employment
- Support Services & Accessibility
- Communication Issues
Submitting Proposals
- Complete the Presentation Proposal Form (requires Microsoft Word).
- Submit a summary (not exceeding 500 words) of the proposed presentation for review by the planning committee. Preference will be given to research proposals. Include at least 3 learning outcomes in your proposal.
- Include an abstract of the presentation (not exceeding 100 words). If accepted, abstract will be included in the program book.
- Include a short biography (50-75 words) of each presenter.

Presenters are responsible for their own travel, lodging, meals, and incidental expenses. Plan to bring your own laptop computer for PowerPoint presentations.
Presenter’s registration fee will be waived for the conference.
